In-Home Newborn Family Session

I had so much fun with Baby S and her family during this session. Family newborn sessions are quickly becoming one of my favorite types of sessions and I can’t wait to do more of them!

Family Sessions with Newborns

While many of my newborn session clients are first-time parents, I always get excited when I have a client who has older children too. I met this family when they only had one child and a second on the way. I actually photographed their American wedding celebration after they moved here from China! While this session was primarily to document baby S in her newborn stage, we also made sure to capture her older siblings and the role that they play. Especially when you have a child becoming an older sibling for the first time, it is so important to make them feel included. Documenting their relationship with the new baby is such a great way to cherish both of the children and these are often the photographs that parents love the most.

During my newborn sessions, I also make sure to get plenty of photos of both parents. Whether it’s your first child or your fifth, the newborn stage moves quickly and you deserve beautiful photos of you with your baby. Too often, I find that moms are behind the camera instead of in front of it, so it’s a huge priority of mine to take authentic photos of you and your newborn.

This family session was truly a joy to capture and baby S is the luckiest little girl to grow up in this loving family!

Newborn Lifestyle Session

This session with Baby L and his parents is just too stinking cute! We had such a great evening at their home capturing these photos for them to cherish.

Newborn Lifestyle Sessions

If you are looking for a photographer for your newborn session, an important item to note is that there are two popular types of newborn sessions. There is posed newborn photography (sometimes also referred to as studio newborn photography) and then there is lifestyle newborn photography. If you are looking for photos of your little babe bundled up in a basket or a carefully curated set, that is posed newborn photography. What I offer is lifestyle newborn photography.

Lifestyle newborn photography is what it sounds like - photos of your newborn in everyday life. These photos usually include parents and siblings and take place in your home. They capture not only your newborn but what life looked like at this time. I love newborn lifestyle photography because having a newborn is so much more than just a sleepy baby with rosy cheeks. It’s also diaper changes and feeding and the way your home looks when the sunlight hits the rocking chair in the nursery.

My goal is always to preserve a moment in time for my clients, and newborn photography is no exception to that. Baby L and his parents let me into their lives for an evening and we captured this time for them to look back on and remember.

Maryland Backyard Family Session

Photographing C & G and their parents was such a joy. This session is a beautiful reminder that you don’t need an occasion to take family photos. Your family in any stage is worth documenting.

In-Home Baltimore Family Session

My favorite part of in-home family sessions is getting to photograph children and parents in their natural state. Seeing the way that siblings interact with each other and how parents play with their children is a beautiful thing to witness. This session with C & G was a great example of a family who allowed me to come into their life for a day and capture it honestly. From reading books to jumping on the bed to playing on the swing set - these moments are what a real day in their life looks like, not something that we posed and put together. While this might not be how everyone prefers their family photos, I’m drawn to the authenticity time and time again. So often we see parents trying to get their kids to smile for a posed photo, but what if we just let them do what they love and photograph the joy on their faces as they do it? Parenthood isn’t always glamorous, and I don’t portray it that way. I want you to have photos to look back on that transport you to this time in your life, not just a pretty picture to hang on your wall. After all, these are the types of photos from my own childhood that I love the most.

I had so much fun during this session and I’m so proud of the art we created together.

In-Home Milestone Family Session

These photos of Baby T and his parents make me emotional every time I look at them. These phases in babyhood are so fleeting, and I’m so glad I could capture them for this gorgeous family.

Milestone Sessions on Film

There is something so special about this age - the eyes just starting to take in everything around them, the baby giggles, the chunky legs, and soft skin. As every parent knows, your baby grows faster than you can possibly imagine during their first year, so it’s so important to stop and take it in every once in a while.

While newborn photos are classic and gorgeous in their own right, it can be stressful to organize a photo session in the first few weeks postpartum. I’ve become a huge fan of these milestone sessions as an alternative - capturing your baby when they’re a few months old. Not only are parents less exhausted at this point, but your baby is finally interacting with you and is an active participant instead of just sleeping through the session.

This session with Baby T was so precious, and even more so since it took place in their home. I love capturing families in their own spaces. Our homes are reflections of who we are, and so often we don’t have any photos of them! Getting to capture these three in their house and on their property was incredibly special, and something I hope they cherish for a lifetime.

Loch Raven Reservoir Family Mini-Session

While newborn sessions are popular for a reason (hello, adorable infants) I might love sessions with toddlers even more. This mini-session with P and her parents was the perfect way to catch this fleeting stage of her life, and I love how the photos turned out!

Family Mini-Sessions on Film

This family mini-session at Loch Raven Reservoir was so much fun. Little P was incredibly fascinated by my camera, giving us some absolutely adorable photos. She was a trooper during this sunset session, happy to give Mom and Dad hugs and play with the leaves. Of course, I also snuck in some photos of just Mom and Dad! Parenthood is such an important part of your relationship and one I love documenting.

One of the most fun parts of being a film photographer is choosing what film and camera combinations to use during my sessions for the best result. For this mini-session I decided on a 35mm lens on my Canon AE-1 with Kodak Portra 400 film. This gave us 36 exposures with beautiful warm tones, perfect for this gorgeous fall day. It gives a very fine grain to the images and medium contrast, making it a super popular film type.

Looking for a quick session for your family for a birthday or holiday photos? A film mini-session is the perfect option.

Lakeside Family Session in Baltimore County

This family session at Loch Raven Reservoir in Baltimore County might be my favorite family session yet. We decided to shoot only film, leaving space for all the imperfect moments that happen with little ones, and yet the images turned out more perfect than I could have ever imagined.

Little E & B were the stars of this shoot, and they had so much fun running through the forest and climbing on logs. They observed the geese carefully as the sun set and had so many questions for me about my film cameras. Mom and Dad were patient and prioritized getting authentic photos over posed ones - something I deeply appreciate as a photographer and mother. We had such a fun evening and I’m so glad I could document this time for their family.

Loch Raven Reservoir is one of my favorite spots for family sessions, especially during fall. The trees show a beautiful display of colors, and the beach is the perfect spot to capture the sunset. The area is full of wildlife and generally not crowded, making it a great place to let the kids get some energy out.
